The Santa Barbara festivities of Chulilla are celebrated in honor of the patron saint of the town, Saint Barbara, and take place every year in December, although they are also celebrated during the month of August after the depopulation of the 1850s. The history of these festivities dates back to the 19th century, when a cholera epidemic devastated the town and many people died.

The survivors of the epidemic, in gratitude for Saint Barbara’s intercession to stop the disease, decided to organize a celebration in her honor. Since then, the Santa Barbara festivities have been celebrated every year and have become one of the most important celebrations in Chulilla.

During the festivities, the town is filled with music, dancing, and cultural and religious activities. The neighbors dress in traditional costumes and processions are organized through the streets, carrying the image of the patron saint. A solemn mass is also celebrated in honor of Saint Barbara, and fireworks and firecrackers are burned in her honor.

The Santa Barbara festivities are an opportunity for the residents of Chulilla to come together around their faith and history, and to celebrate the importance of the patron saint in the life of the town. Despite the years that have passed since the cholera epidemic that gave rise to these festivities, devotion and gratitude to Saint Barbara continue to be present in the town and in the annual celebrations in her honor.
